There aren't many car makers able to find anything positive to report with the world economy in recession and ever more stringent CO2 regulations.
But smart is the exception and for good reason. Emitting just 88g/km of CO2, the fortwo CDI is the lowest polluting car in the world and on the official combined mpg cycle it has recorded an astounding figure of 85.9mpg - good enough for a near 700-mile range on its 38-litre fuel tank. This is as close to cheap motoring as you'll get these days.
The hybrid-beating emissions and fuel consumption, not to mention free road tax thanks to its sub-99g/km emissions, now make it a viable addition to the model line up and the first cars will be here in February.
Powered by a 799cc three-cylinder motor, the fortwo cdi has just 44bhp but will top 83mph and give you the greenest credentials that it is possible to have on four wheels. Equipment levels are also far from Spartan. All the mod cons you could need are included, with a five-speed automated gearbox, head/thorax airbags and the second-generation car's expanded cabin and boot space too.
